How shear testing works
Shear testing is a very effective and fast way of accurately testing fixings and fastenings. Generally, shear forces cause one surface of a particular material to move in one direction and the other surface to move in the opposite direction. This ensures that the material involved is stressed in a sliding motion. These tests differ from compression and tension tests, as the forces applied are parallel to the two contact surfaces, meanwhile in tension and compression tests they are perpendicular to the contact surface.
Why is shear testing important?
Shear testing and stress testing is incredibly necessary, given it determines the shear strength of the material and therefore the maximum shear stress that it can withstand before failure occurs. In fact, this is a very important design characteristic of many types of fasteners and fixings like screws and bolts. If a small fastener fails in shear, it could possibly lead to a chain of failures that could lead to the entire destruction of a large structure or building; which is why it's imperative that your fastenings are accurately tested by professionals.
It is also important to have shear testing carried out regularly so that there are no costly repairs or rebuilding work having to be carried out in the future. Not only is shear testing important for the safety of your employees, as well as anyone living and working in the building, it is also imperative for future work on the building.
A wide range of materials tested
There are a variety of materials that are commonly tested in shear, including rigid substrates, layered composites and adhesives. The common rigid substrates that may be shear tested may be composed of composites, ceramics, woods, plastics and metals but usually come in a solid form that's often used as building materials or fasteners. We will also test adhesives, as these are likely to experience shear stress when the materials are pulled in opposing directions in an attempt to slide them apart.
